The Central Government has issued a notification to begin land acquisition for the long-awaited Mohali–Rajpura railway line, a project set to significantly enhance rail connectivity between Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana.
Spanning 18.11 km and estimated to cost ₹443 crore, the new line will link Mohali with Rajpura, easing congestion on existing routes and enabling faster passenger and freight movement. The Ministry of Railways has sought the Punjab government’s cooperation in acquiring 53.84 hectares of land across Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Mohali districts.
According to Komal Mittal, Deputy Commissioner (Mohali), “Once the final alignment plan is received, we will proceed with land acquisition.”
The project is expected to bring substantial economic benefits, cutting travel time and boosting key sectors such as agriculture, trade, and industry. By strengthening regional integration, the new railway line will also open up greater opportunities for commerce and tourism across North India.
