The track doubling project between Kanniyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram is expected to be completed within the next two years, significantly improving rail connectivity in the region.
Southern Railway General Manager R.N. Singh stated that track doubling has already been completed on the Kanniyakumari–Aalur section, while over 70 percent of the work between Thiruvananthapuram and Parasala in Kerala has been finished. Once the entire project is completed, additional train services will be introduced along this corridor. The ongoing redevelopment of the Kanniyakumari Railway Terminus will further support this expansion by providing increased capacity for new services.
During an inspection at Nagercoil Junction, Singh urged officials to accelerate the remaining work to ensure timely completion. He also announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would flag off the Nagercoil–Mangalore Amrit Bharat Express on January 23 in Chennai. The new train, a low-cost, non-air-conditioned sleeper service, will connect cities located more than 800 km apart, offering improved and affordable travel options for passengers.
