The Groundwater Exit: KMC Fast-Tracks New Treatment Plants

By the end of 2027, residents of areas such as Jodhpur Park, Lake Gardens, and parts of the EM Bypass near Avisikta are expected to stop depending on groundwater for drinking water.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is developing two semi-underground water reservoirs along with two new booster pumping stations to supply treated potable water. The Mandir Para Uttaran booster station will receive water from the Dhapa water treatment plant, while the Jodhpur Park booster station will be supplied by the Garden Reach plant. This initiative aims to reduce groundwater extraction and ensure the direct supply of safe drinking water from treatment facilities. A KMC official noted that efforts are underway to identify small plots across the Tollygunge–Jadavpur belt to set up additional booster pumping stations.

In addition, a 20 million-gallon-per-day water treatment plant is under construction at Dhapa to address rising demand. The mayor has directed officials to expedite the work so that the facility becomes operational within the next eight months.
