The State Highways Department has commenced work on widening the Vellore–Tirupattur Main Road (SH-122) into a four-lane stretch at Abdullapuram, located near the under-construction Vellore airport.
The expansion aims to create an alternative corridor for motorists, enabling them to bypass the congested Chennai–Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) and providing improved connectivity for small towns and agricultural communities along the route.
Implemented under the Chief Minister’s Road Development Plan (CMRDP) 2024–25, the project is designed to enhance traffic flow, particularly for heavy vehicles such as trucks and lorries. The ₹50 crore project covers 79.5 km, with 8 km of the stretch being widened from 7 metres to 10 metres.
Key components include 21 minor bridges, bus bays, stormwater drains, and safety infrastructure such as CCTV cameras. The project is expected to be completed by 2026. As part of the work, 622 trees will be uprooted, and several electric poles and transformers will be relocated to accommodate the widened roadway.
