NTPC and BHEL Launch 800 MW Ultra-Super Critical Power Plant

In a major development for India's power sector, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has unveiled plans for a new joint venture between NTPC and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). This ambitious project will see the construction of an 800 MW ultra-super critical thermal power plant. The Central government has pledged financial backing to ensure the success of this initiative.

The cutting-edge plant will leverage advanced ultra-supercritical (AUSC) technology, a sophisticated innovation developed locally through a collaboration involving the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, BHEL, and NTPC. This technology represents a significant leap forward, with the government investing Rs 1,554 crore in its development.

Ultra-supercritical power plants are designed to operate at temperatures and pressures surpassing the critical point of water. This means the plants achieve higher efficiencies compared to traditional systems by operating in conditions where liquid and gas phases of water coexist.

India's foray into this advanced technology began with the commissioning of a 660 MW plant by NTPC in Madhya Pradesh in 2019. This new project marks a substantial step forward in the country's energy infrastructure, setting a precedent for future developments.
