Ganjam's Greenfield Dream: A Push for a New Airport in Odisha

The demand for a greenfield airport in Ganjam district, Odisha, has resurfaced, with renewed calls from local residents and political leaders urging both the state and Central governments to take swift action.

The push gained momentum after the Central government identified land for a new airport just 30 km away in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, raising concerns about Odisha potentially missing out on regional aviation development. In response, Odisha’s Transport Minister has advocated for establishing an airport at Subani, located near the Odisha-Andhra border, citing its potential to serve populations across both states and boost regional economic growth.

However, public opinion remains divided. While Subani has strategic cross-border appeal, others argue that a more centrally located site within Ganjam district would offer better accessibility. Alternative locations under consideration include 500 acres near Laxmipur mouza and another 500 acres near Sorada.

In the interim, the Rengeilunda airstrip, currently limited by a short runway, is undergoing infrastructure upgrades—including runway extension, cabling, and land acquisition. Authorities anticipate that the airstrip will become operational by January, offering a near-term improvement in aviation connectivity for southern Odisha.
