Parandur: The Flight Path to a $1.5-Trillion Tamil Nadu

Industry leaders and former bureaucrats have highlighted the importance of the proposed Parandur Greenfield Airport for Tamil Nadu’s long-term economic growth, warning that delays in the project could impact the state's ambition of becoming a $1.5-trillion economy by 2036.

Speaking at a panel discussion on the need for a second airport near Chennai, participants emphasized that the project is essential to address future capacity constraints at the existing Chennai airport and support the rising demand for passenger and cargo traffic. They noted that enhanced aviation infrastructure will be critical to maintaining Chennai’s competitiveness as a major business, manufacturing, and investment hub.

The panellists described the Parandur airport as a strategic economic catalyst rather than just an infrastructure project, with the potential to attract global capability centres, advanced manufacturing investments, high-value exports, and international business activity. They stressed that timely execution of the project will be crucial for sustaining Tamil Nadu’s growth trajectory and achieving its long-term economic objectives.
