ArcelorMittal's 1 GW Clean Energy Leap in India

ArcelorMittal, the global steel and mining leader, has begun supplying clean energy to AMNS India in Gujarat from its newly commissioned 1 GW solar and wind project in Andhra Pradesh. Developed by AM Green Energy—a wholly-owned ArcelorMittal subsidiary—the $0.7 billion project is the company’s largest renewable energy initiative to date.

The project, spanning 3,100 acres and comprising approximately 1.5 million solar panels and 91 wind turbines, will generate 2.5 billion kWh of electricity annually—enough to power nearly 10 million Indian homes. This clean energy will help reduce carbon emissions at AMNS India’s facilities by around 1.5 million tonnes per year, contributing to ArcelorMittal’s goal of cutting CO₂ intensity by 20% by 2030 (compared to 2021 levels).

This marks ArcelorMittal’s first major renewable project and forms part of a broader 2.3 GW clean energy strategy across India, Brazil, and Argentina. CEO Aditya Mittal called the project a significant step toward decarbonizing steelmaking and noted its completion in just 18 months—making it one of India’s fastest-delivered utility-scale renewable projects.
