Balrampur Chini Mills Forges a Green Revolution with Bioyug PLA

Balrampur Chini Mills (BCML), a leading name in India’s sugar industry, has announced the launch of Balrampur Bioyug—the country’s first industrial-scale, fully integrated Polylactic Acid (PLA) biopolymer initiative. Developed with a phased investment of Rs 2,850 crore, the facility is slated to become operational by end-2026.

Located in Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh, adjacent to BCML’s existing sugar mill, the plant will have an annual production capacity of 80,000 tonnes of PLA. The Bioyug facility will transform sugarcane derivatives into PLA through a fully circular, renewable energy-powered process, producing a 100% compostable, plant-based alternative to fossil-fuel plastics.

“The Bioyug initiative is centred around a fully integrated facility that will convert sugarcane derivatives directly into PLA,” said Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director, BCML.

Positioned as a truly "earth-to-earth" solution, Bioyug supports national priorities like ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Viksit Bharat’, and aims to transform India’s green manufacturing ecosystem. The PLA output will serve diverse sectors including packaging, food service, biomedical, textiles, and 3D printing, and will offer a sustainable replacement for banned single-use plastics.

The initiative is also expected to catalyse MSME participation in green packaging, while creating a direct value chain for sugarcane farmers and strengthening India’s position in global biopolymer technology and innovation.
