Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has clinched a substantial contract worth Rs 19,422 crore for the Talabira Thermal Project in Odisha, working in collaboration with NLC India Ltd. This turnkey contract entails the development of a 3x800 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Talabira, Odisha, with an estimated project duration of about 5 years.
BHEL's scope of work spans engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the power plant, encompassing the supply of essential components like boilers, turbine-generators, and auxiliary equipment. Additionally, BHEL will oversee the erection and commissioning of the plant.
The project's fruition will significantly augment power generation, contributing 2,400 MW to the national grid, meeting the escalating electricity demand in Odisha and neighboring regions. Besides addressing energy needs, this endeavor is anticipated to generate employment opportunities, creating approximately 12,000 jobs during the construction phase and fostering regional development.
Utilizing coal from NLC's Talabira mines, this power plant holds the potential to curtail reliance on imported coal, enhancing energy security. Embracing ultra-supercritical technology, the project promises heightened efficiency and reduced emissions compared to conventional coal-based power plants, signifying advancements in technological prowess.
Following BHEL's successful bid—reportedly surpassing competitors such as L&T-MHI with a more competitive price—the contract is poised to be formally signed imminently, paving the way for the project's commencement. This significant milestone underscores BHEL's pivotal role in bolstering India's power infrastructure and fostering technological innovation in the energy sector.
