Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar inaugurated the first phase of the Bhopal Metro on December 20, 2025, a day ahead of the start of commercial operations on December 21.
The inaugural seven-kilometre priority corridor on the Orange Line includes eight elevated stations between Subhash Nagar and AIIMS and is expected to serve around 3,000 commuters ежедневно. State Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya was also present at the inauguration. With this launch, Bhopal becomes the second city in Madhya Pradesh after Indore and the 26th city in the country to have Metro connectivity.
Speaking at the event, Union Minister Khattar noted the rapid expansion of India’s Metro network, which currently spans 1,083 km and is expected to reach 1,090 km soon, with the goal of surpassing the United States in total Metro length.
The complete Bhopal Metro project covers 30.8 km and consists of two corridors—the 16.74 km Orange Line and the 14.16 km Blue Line—along with a dedicated depot. The total estimated cost of the project is ₹10,033 crore, while the priority corridor alone was developed at a cost of ₹2,225 crore. The project’s groundwork began with surveys in the early 2010s, followed by approval of the Detailed Project Report in 2015.
