The Maharashtra state government has approved the transfer of 18 acres of land in Deonar from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) for the development of compressed bio-gas (CBG) plants with a processing capacity of 1,000 tonnes per day (TPD).
The project, to be implemented in two phases, will see MGL investing over ₹600 crore in construction and operations. The plants will process municipal wet waste, contributing to cleaner urban waste management. Approved during a state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the initiative supports the central government’s Gobardhan scheme, which aims to set up 500 biogas projects, including 75 bio-methanation plants in urban areas.
Under the scheme, oil and gas companies will finance the infrastructure, while state governments will provide land and necessary facilities at concessional rates. Accordingly, the Maharashtra government has approved the land allotment at a nominal lease rent of ₹72,843 per year for a period of 20 years, extendable by an additional five years. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between BMC and MGL was signed in June 2023, marking a significant step toward sustainable and circular urban waste management.
