The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will inaugurate the newly constructed Sindoor Flyover, formerly known as the Carnac Bridge, on July 10. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will preside over the ceremony. The bridge has been renamed to honor “Operation Sindoor,” a military initiative launched by India.
Located near Masjid Bunder railway station, the flyover connects D’Mello Road and serves as a key east–west link in South Mumbai. Spanning 328 meters, including 70 meters within railway limits, the flyover is supported by two massive steel girders—each 70 meters long, 26.5 meters wide, and 10.8 meters high—mounted on RCC piers. The southern girder was launched on October 19, 2024, and the northern one on January 26 and 30, 2025. Construction was completed by June 10, 2025.
The flyover accommodates two-way traffic and is expected to significantly reduce congestion near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Masjid Bunder, and Mohammad Ali Road. The original 154-year-old Carnac Bridge was declared unsafe by Central Railway in August 2022 and was dismantled before being rebuilt with railway approval to restore this critical transit route.
