From Four to Six: NH-45 Set for Major Lane Expansion

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is preparing to widen a 68-km stretch of NH-45 (GST Road) between Paranur and Salavady, passing through Chengalpattu and Tindivanam districts, into a six-lane highway. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is nearing completion, with construction expected to begin within a year.

Estimated at a cost of ₹2,500 crore, the project will feature continuous service lanes, four truck lay-bys (2.5 hectares each), and two rest areas (1.25 hectares each). The corridor, which currently handles around 59,657 passenger car units daily, includes 30 at-grade intersections and 33 accident-prone blackspots—making the upgrade essential for improving safety and traffic flow.

Plans include rehabilitating 14 existing structures, widening 10 more, and constructing 15 new flyovers and bridges. Minimal land acquisition is anticipated.

The project aims to ease congestion, enhance road safety, and boost regional connectivity along this vital southern transport corridor.
