JNPT to Dadri: The Final Leg of India’s Western Freight Dream

The final leg of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), linking Mumbai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) with Dadri, is nearing completion.

The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) has confirmed that the entire WDFC is expected to become fully operational by March 31, 2026. A key component of the project is the 102-km JNPT–Vaitarna section, which serves as a critical link in the corridor. This stretch, now in the advanced stages of completion, is expected to significantly enhance freight movement between JNPT and northern India, including the National Capital Region, Haryana, and Punjab.

While the 1,337-km Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) has already been fully commissioned, around 1,404 km of the WDFC was operational as of December 2025. A senior official reiterated that full services on the WDFC will commence before March 31, 2026. In parallel, DFCCIL is planning three additional dedicated freight corridors, with a particular focus on the proposed East Coast corridor.
