Kolkata Metro Advances Sustainability with Solar Power Installations

Kolkata Metro has taken a significant step towards sustainability by installing solar power plants across several stations, as part of its initiative to adopt renewable energy. The move underscores Kolkata Metro's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and increasing reliance on clean energy. Solar plants with a capacity of 763 kWp have been set up on the Blue Line, covering key stations such as Noapara, Dum Dum, Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, Kavi Subhash, and the Belgachia tunnel ramp.

Moreover, the Metro has expanded its green energy initiative to its healthcare facility, the Tapan Sinha Memorial Hospital, which is now equipped with solar panels to meet part of its energy needs. This diversification into different operational sectors marks Kolkata Metro’s comprehensive approach to integrating renewable energy solutions.

In addition to the Blue Line, solar installations have also been deployed on the East-West Corridor, with plants boasting a combined capacity of 1,519 kWp at Salt Lake Sector V, Central Park stations, and the Central Park Depot. Meanwhile, on the Purple Line, a 1,400 kWp plant has been installed at the Joka carshed, further solidifying Kolkata Metro’s green transformation.

These solar projects, executed through public-private partnerships (PPPs), highlight collaborative efforts towards sustainability. Kolkata Metro now boasts a total installed solar capacity of 4,197 kWp, with an additional 360 kWp under construction at various sites in Belgachia and Tollygunge, set to be operational by the end of the month.

This solar expansion initiative has been managed through contractual public-private partnerships, confirming that these installations are part of a contract-based framework, driving Kolkata Metro’s renewable energy ambitions forward.
