The Wainganga-Nalganga river linking project, a vital initiative to combat drought in Vidarbha, has entered the 'survey & investigation' phase, scheduled to continue until 2027.
The Maharashtra government informed the Legislative Council that ₹1,232 crore has been allocated for this phase, with a Nagpur-based firm awarded the survey contract. Cabinet Minister Girish Mahajan stated that the ₹87,343 crore project, spanning a decade, aims to irrigate 3,71,277 hectares of farmland. "The project has progressed beyond planning," he confirmed, highlighting that administrative approvals are secured, and work orders were issued in January.
Approved in August last year, the project involves lifting water from the Wainganga River in Bhandara district and channeling it through a 426.52-km canal and pipeline network to the Nalganga River in Buldhana district. It is expected to benefit farmers across Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Yavatmal, Akola, and Buldhana.
Minister Mahajan emphasized, "This marks a crucial step in addressing Vidarbha's water scarcity, ensuring irrigation, drinking water supply, and industrial water needs."
