The Delhi government has accelerated the execution of four major trunk drain projects under its revamped Drainage Master Plan, aimed at providing long-term relief from waterlogging across the city.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the initiatives will significantly improve Delhi’s capacity to manage heavy monsoon rainfall. In West Delhi, a 4.5 km trunk drain project costing ₹220.93 crore is being developed to address chronic flooding in Kirari, Mundka, Bawana, and Nangloi. Implemented by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, the project will manage runoff from a 1,520-acre catchment area.
In South Delhi, the 11.38 km MB Road drain redevelopment, with an estimated cost of ₹387.84 crore, is expected to be completed within approximately two-and-a-half years. Additional projects include the 7.2 km Kirari–Rithala drain in northwest Delhi, costing ₹250.21 crore, and drainage improvements along Rohtak Road valued at ₹184 crore. These works are currently underway and are targeted for completion by March 2026.
The accelerated push follows the launch of the ₹57,000-crore Delhi Drainage Master Plan 2025, which aims to reduce flooding in the city by 50% over the next five years. CM Gupta noted that much of Delhi’s existing drainage infrastructure is based on designs from the 1970s and requires urgent modernisation. The trunk drain projects are scheduled for completion between 2026 and 2027, backed by significant public investment.
