Mumbai's $12 Billion Underground Revolution

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is spearheading an ambitious 70-km underground tunnel network project in Mumbai, estimated at ₹1.05 lakh crore.

Conceived as a ‘third mode of urban mobility’, the initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and complement the city’s rail and road systems. The first phase will cover a 16 km stretch from Worli to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The longest tunnel, connecting South Mumbai to Borivali, will extend 44 km.

Designed as high-capacity underground corridors, the tunnels will help decongest major arterial routes such as the Western Express Highway and SV Road, ensuring faster, smoother, and safer commutes.

Currently, feasibility studies are underway to assess technical, economic, and environmental viability. The project will be implemented in phases, aligned with future mobility needs and urban growth.
