On 10 February 2026, the Maharashtra State Cabinet approved long-term financing of ₹15,000 crore from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) to strengthen irrigation infrastructure across the state.
The funding will support the completion of 57 ongoing irrigation projects and the rehabilitation of 193 ageing and deteriorated canal systems. The initiative is expected to bring nearly eight lakh hectares of additional land under irrigation. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, with the objective of accelerating project execution and ensuring timely completion by the Water Resources Department.
Of the total sanctioned amount, ₹8,982.76 crore has been earmarked for completing the 57 irrigation projects, while ₹6,017.24 crore will be allocated for modernising canals and improving water distribution networks under 193 existing schemes. Along with creating new irrigation assets, the funding will also enhance the efficiency and reliability of water supply for agricultural use across the state.
