New Depth, New Era: The ₹1,300 Crore Plan for Mormugao

Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) has sought ₹1,300 crore from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways for the redevelopment of Berth 9 and the deepening of the port’s navigational channel.

The proposal includes ₹750 crore for the modernisation of the 350-metre-long multi-cargo Berth 9, which is currently the only berth at the port that has not been privatised. MPA Chairman N. Vinodkumar expressed optimism about receiving the required support, stating that the authority expects the Government of India to approve the proposal and sanction the necessary funds.

In addition, MPA plans to undertake capital dredging of the approach channel to increase its depth from 14.4 metres to 19.8 metres. The upgrade will enable the port to handle larger capesize vessels, thereby enhancing cargo handling capacity, reducing logistics costs, and contributing to lower carbon emissions.
