The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved a major milestone in its electrification and green energy drive, completing electrification of 1,043 route kilometres (RKM) between January and July 2025.
Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, announced that the Rangiya Division is now fully electrified, enabling 100% eco-friendly train operations across the division. A key highlight is the electrification of the Rangiya–Rangapara–Dibrugarh route, allowing the prestigious Rajdhani Express to run entirely on electric traction in this corridor.
Electrification has also been completed on key double-line sections in Assam, including the 45.69 track kilometre (TKM) Chaparmukh–Hojai Down Line and the 99.32 TKM Dudhnai–Azara Second Line, supporting ongoing capacity enhancement and doubling projects.
As a result, since June 2025, the New Delhi–Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express has been operating entirely on electric traction via New Tinsukia, improving speed, efficiency, and sustainability. In total, 28 trains are now running on full electric traction within NFR, significantly reducing diesel dependence and freeing up 12 diesel locomotives from active service.
These achievements mark a substantial step toward Indian Railways’ goal of full electrification and a net-zero carbon footprint by 2030.
