BPCL Boosts Kochi Refinery Capacity to 17 MMTPA in Petrochemical Push

Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) plans to scale up the refining capacity of its Kochi Refinery in Kerala from 15.5 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) to 17 MMTPA.

This strategic expansion is designed to enhance operational flexibility, satisfy rising domestic energy demands, and tightly integrate refining operations with petrochemical manufacturing. According to BPCL Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Khanna, the capacity upgrade—coupled with an ongoing polypropylene project—will significantly broaden the company’s portfolio of higher-value products.

The growth initiative follows a landmark performance period in which BPCL's refineries achieved a record-breaking crude throughput of 41.2 million tonnes across fiscal year 2025–26. Simultaneously, progress continues on an integrated refinery expansion and petrochemical project at the Bina Refinery in Madhya Pradesh. Backed by downstream petrochemical units and an upcoming ethylene cracker, the Bina site is evolving into a comprehensive energy and petrochemical hub for Central India.

Together, these major capital ventures reinforce BPCL’s broader corporate roadmap to expand refining capabilities while deepening petrochemical integration nationwide.
