North Chennai Rising: The ₹70 Crore Infrastructure Upgrade

On 1 January 2026, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inaugurated a series of infrastructure projects under the North Chennai Development Scheme, aimed at enhancing power supply, water infrastructure, street lighting, and education in the region.

He launched the Broadway 33/11kV substation, constructed by TANGEDCO at a cost of ₹18.24 crore, which will address low-voltage issues and provide reliable power to over 15,000 consumers in areas including Broadway, Mannadi, and Sowcarpet. The Deputy Chief Minister also inspected the construction of 15-lakh-litre water storage tanks by Metrowater, valued at ₹27 crore, and unveiled 128 new streetlights along Prakasam Road, installed at a cost of ₹1.26 crore. Additionally, he laid the foundation stone for the Chief Minister's Study Centre and Modern Library, with an estimated investment of ₹23.06 crore.

These initiatives form part of the government’s broader efforts to promote balanced and sustainable development, particularly in North Chennai.
