NTPC Enters Nuclear Sector with 2.8 GW Rajasthan Project

NTPC is set to make its foray into nuclear energy next month with the foundation stone laying of a 2,800 MW nuclear power project in Banswara, Rajasthan.

The project will be developed under Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd. (ASVINI), a joint venture between NTPC and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL), with NTPC holding a 49% stake. The plant will comprise four 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs). The first unit is expected to be operational by 2031, with full commissioning targeted for 2036.

NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh stated that the company plans to “go very aggressive on nuclear,” setting an ambitious target of 30 GW nuclear capacity by 2047—contributing significantly to India’s broader goal of achieving 200 GW of nuclear power by that year.

In preparation for future expansion, NTPC is actively engaging with global technology providers, including Tata Consulting Engineers, L&T, EDF, Rosatom, and Holtec.

India currently has 8,800 MW of operational nuclear capacity, with an additional 6,600 MW under construction and 7,000 MW in advanced stages of development. Nuclear power is increasingly being positioned as a key low-emission, baseload energy source, with policy reforms aimed at accelerating capacity addition and facilitating greater private sector participation.
