Okhla's Green Revolution: Asia's Largest Sewage Plant Opens

Delhi is set to inaugurate Asia’s largest sewage treatment plant in Okhla on September 30, marking a major milestone in the city’s wastewater management efforts.

Spread across 40 acres and built at a cost of ₹1,161 crore, the 124 MGD (million gallons per day) facility has been developed by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in collaboration with the Central government under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), with financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Designed to significantly reduce the volume of untreated sewage flowing into the Yamuna River, the plant will cater to nearly 4 million residents across south, central, and old Delhi, covering areas such as Green Park, Civil Lines, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, and Okhla.

The facility replaces four aging treatment plants and incorporates features such as power generation and the production of A-class reusable sludge.

The inauguration ceremony will be attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and Water Minister Parvesh Verma, alongside dignitaries from Japan.
