Panjab University Unlocks Major South Campus Expansion

The Chandigarh administration has granted conceptual approval for the Master Plan of Panjab University’s Sector-25 South Campus, paving the way for a major expansion focused on student welfare and academic excellence.

The student-centric plan envisions the addition of nine new academic blocks to complement the 12 existing ones, which currently accommodate 16 departments in fields such as healthcare, business, sciences, and social sciences. A new library-cum-reading hall will provide quiet study spaces in close proximity to academic departments.

Enhancing student life beyond the classroom, the plan includes a 2.75-acre recreation area and a dedicated student activity centre to promote cultural and extracurricular involvement. A multi-level basement parking facility near the UIET gate will accommodate 700 vehicles, aiming to improve campus accessibility and pedestrian safety.

Residential infrastructure will also expand with the construction of four girls’ hostels, two boys’ hostels, and an international hostel—three of which are already operational.

Key projects underway include a 2,200-seat auditorium for academic and cultural events, and a four-storey tech block near the Dental Hospital designed to support innovation and start-ups. The plan has received approval from both the Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee and the Chief Administrator, marking a significant step forward in the university’s development.
