Pinnapuram: World's First GW-Scale Integrated Renewable Energy Hub

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy & Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi, visited Greenko’s Integrated Renewable Energy Storage Project at Pinnapuram, Andhra Pradesh. Commending its impressive scale and rapid development, the Minister highlighted the project's pioneering role in advancing India’s clean energy ambitions.

The Pinnapuram project is the world’s first and largest GW-scale integrated renewable energy initiative, combining 4,000 MW of solar, 1,000 MW of wind, and 1,680 MW of pumped hydropower. With a daily storage capacity of 10,080 MWh in a single cycle, the project delivers firm, dispatchable, and carbon-free energy—supporting industries such as green steel, green aluminium, and green hydrogen production.

During the visit, Minister Joshi took an aerial tour and inspected various components of the facility. Anil Chalamalasetty, Group CEO and MD of Greenko, provided a comprehensive site tour and emphasized the project's role in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors, boosting regional economic growth, and generating significant employment. The project is expected to avoid 3.3 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.

Designed to integrate clean energy generation, long-duration storage, and flexible power supply, the project is a critical step toward enhancing India’s energy security and accelerating its transition to sustainable alternatives. With a total investment of USD 4.2 billion—USD 1.2 billion for pumped storage and USD 3 billion for solar and wind infrastructure—the Pinnapuram facility represents a milestone in addressing renewable energy intermittency through scalable and sustainable innovation. Greenko is also developing similar pumped hydro storage projects across India, aiming to create a cloud-based energy storage platform exceeding 100 GWh.
