Powering Up Chandigarh: CPDL's ₹956 Crore Infrastructure Boost

Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL), the private entity overseeing the Union Territory’s electricity supply, has announced a ₹956 crore investment over the next five years to overhaul the city’s ageing power infrastructure.

In its submission to the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC), CPDL highlighted that over 50% of Chandigarh’s power distribution network has exceeded its operational lifespan, contributing to frequent outages and reduced efficiency. As part of its proposed capital expenditure (capex) plan, CPDL has also sought a tariff revision to support infrastructure upgrades and boost operational sustainability.

The investment will be directed toward the installation of new power transformers, underground cabling, and the replacement of outdated electrical equipment. CPDL also plans to enhance customer service and system reliability through the deployment of smart meters, modern safety protocols, and digitisation and automation across its operations.

Further, the company will establish dedicated customer care centres and is actively conducting a citywide KYC update drive to ensure consumers receive real-time alerts on outages, billing, and services via SMS and email.
