Tesla is actively seeking local partners in India to facilitate the manufacturing and installation of its rooftop solar panels. In this collaborative effort, selected partners would handle production and installation while Tesla offers technological support and sales expertise. The company has already engaged with the government and is exploring opportunities for subsidies to bolster the project.
Beyond its renowned electric vehicles, Tesla offers a range of home power solutions, including solar power generation and storage products like Solar Roof, Powerwall (a battery storage unit), and solar panels.
India's recent initiatives to incentivize the rooftop solar sector present a promising landscape for Tesla's endeavors. Projections suggest India's solar rooftop capacity will sustain a robust annual growth rate of 47 percent. As of December, the nation's installed rooftop solar capacity reached 11.1 GW, with the residential sector contributing 2.7 GW.
Tesla has also made specific requests, including considerations for reduced import duties on its vehicles. Expressing a commitment to invest up to USD two billion in establishing a manufacturing facility in India, Tesla has proposed a concessional duty rate of 15 percent on imported cars for the initial two years.
Tesla's ambitions in India gained traction following a meeting between CEO Elon Musk and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the former's visit to the US in June of the previous year. Since then, Tesla executives and Indian officials have been diligently working on the finer details of the company's entry into the Indian market.
