The Nuclear Grid: NTPC Expands Footprint Across 16 States

NTPC is accelerating its entry into the nuclear energy sector and is in discussions with the governments of 16 states—including Bihar, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh—to acquire land for upcoming nuclear power plants.

The company aims to develop 30 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, contributing to India’s national target of 100 GW. NTPC plans to deploy pressurized heavy-water reactors (PHWRs) ranging from 700 MW to 1,600 MW and will collaborate with international partners to support its capacity expansion. Earlier this year, it established NTPC Parmana Urja Nigam to oversee its nuclear initiatives. NTPC’s ongoing projects include the 4x700 MW Mahi Banswara nuclear plant in Rajasthan, developed jointly with NPCIL.

To strengthen operational capability, NTPC is training 60 employees in nuclear technologies and exploring uranium mine acquisitions abroad. These efforts align with India’s clean energy ambitions, bolstering long-term energy security and contributing to the national renewable energy goal of 500 GW by 2030.
