Turning the Tide: Byramangala Lake Gets a ₹391-Crore Makeover

The Karnataka government has approved a ₹391-crore project to restore Byramangala Lake, one of Bengaluru’s most polluted water bodies.

The lake has long been affected by untreated sewage from the Vrushabhavathi River, severely impacting its water quality. The rejuvenation initiative will be implemented jointly by the Minor Irrigation Department and the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). As part of the project, a new sewage treatment plant (STP) will be constructed near the lake to prevent untreated sewage from entering it. Costing ₹230 crore, the STP is designed to treat 100 million litres of sewage per day and is expected to become operational within three years.

BWSSB Chairperson Ram Prasath Manohar highlighted that the project is part of the broader Vrushabhavathi Valley initiative, which already supplies treated water to nearby lakes. The restoration aims to revive Byramangala Lake as a critical water resource, improve the surrounding ecology, and provide lasting benefits to local communities.
