Unveiling the East and West: India's Dedicated Freight Corridors Project

The Ministry of Railways has embarked on the construction of two dedicated freight corridors (DFCs) - the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) spanning from Ludhiana to Sonnagar (1,337 km) and the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) running from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) to Dadri (1,506 km).

The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) has reached completion, while 1,220 km of the 1,506 km Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) has been accomplished, with operational train services already established in the completed sections. These DFCs are poised to significantly reduce logistical costs by leveraging higher axle load trains and double stack container trains (DSC), thereby enabling quicker access to Northern hinterlands via Western Ports.

Moreover, they are anticipated to catalyze the emergence of new industrial clusters and Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals. To ensure the punctual completion of these corridors, the government has allocated funds and closely monitored land acquisition, working in tandem with state governments. This oversight is carried out through various platforms, including the project monitoring group (PMG).
