The industrial development strategy linked to the Vizhinjam International Seaport (VISL) in Kerala is advancing rapidly, with VISL set to appoint a consultant to draft a comprehensive plan for port-led industrialisation.
The selected consultant will conduct a feasibility study, identify suitable land parcels, and design a cluster-based development plan focused on key sectors such as logistics, food processing, and manufacturing. In a recent high-level meeting, the Kerala government authorised VISL to acquire a minimum of 200 acres in the first phase. This land will support the development of container yards, warehouses, and essential infrastructure ahead of gateway cargo operations.
To ensure early cargo movement, the state has requested approval from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for a temporary road connecting the port to NH-66 near Thalakode. A permanent cloverleaf interchange is also under consideration, estimated at ₹360 crore and requiring 30 acres, with costs to be equally shared by the state and NHAI. VISL has already paid ₹11 crore to acquire 36 cents of land.
Additionally, a nine-kilometre rail tunnel connecting the port to Balaramapuram is in the pipeline, with tenders expected to be floated this month.
