On 17 July 2025, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and global energy major bp signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to drill stratigraphic wells in India’s Category II and III offshore sedimentary basins. The targeted regions include the Andaman, Mahanadi, Saurashtra, and Bengal basins.
The agreement was signed during the Urja Varta 2025 event in the presence of Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The partnership aims to improve geological understanding and unlock the untapped hydrocarbon potential of these underexplored basins, contributing to India’s long-term energy security and strengthening its upstream data infrastructure.
Kartikeya Dube, Head of Country for bp India, highlighted the strategic importance of the collaboration and the value bp’s advanced seismic technology and deepwater exploration expertise will bring. ONGC described the MoU as a testament to India’s commitment to global energy partnerships and the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat.
The drilling of these stratigraphic wells is expected to open new avenues for exploration and significantly expand knowledge of India’s offshore geological landscape.
