Methanol Missions: Making Maritime Greener at Kandla

Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has unveiled plans to transform Kandla into a green bunkering hub, anchored by a strategic partnership with Assam Petro-Chemicals for renewable methanol production.

Under a definitive agreement, DPA will invest in the production of 60,000 tonnes per year of e-methanol, with Assam Petro-Chemicals providing the technology under a revenue-sharing model. The initiative is a key part of the port’s strategy to supply cost-effective Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO)-compliant methanol to ships, positioning Kandla as a major refuelling hub for greener maritime operations.

In parallel, Thermax will set up a biomethanol plant with a capacity of 5,000 litres per day. DPA is also working with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to secure additional domestic supply through a proposed tender of 5,00,000 tonnes annually over the next two years.

The port authority has already completed a successful shore-to-ship bunkering trial and is planning further demonstrations to strengthen operational readiness. The collaboration with Assam Petro-Chemicals is expected to play a crucial role in building domestic production capacity and supporting India’s shift toward cleaner maritime fuels.

Commenting on the initiative, DPA Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh said that Kandla is poised to emerge as a key destination for ships seeking sustainable refuelling solutions.
