Guwahati's Healthcare Boom: New Hospitals, Expanded Care

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a transformative plan to elevate Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) into one of India’s top-tier healthcare institutions. As part of this ambitious initiative, a major infrastructure overhaul is underway, highlighted by the construction of an 800-bed Mother and Child Care Hospital, which will focus on specialized pediatric and maternal services.

This state-of-the-art facility will also include advanced super-specialty departments such as neurology, cardiology, and kidney transplants. Expected to be completed by October, the project will significantly expand GMCH’s capacity and modernize its specialized care offerings.

The Chief Minister also reviewed progress on two flagship healthcare projects in Guwahati: the Mother and Child Care Hospital and the upcoming Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital — the city’s second medical college. Though currently offering limited outpatient services, the new college is scheduled to be fully functional by August 15. It will feature a 600-bed hospital and enroll 100 MBBS students annually. Future expansion plans include an additional 500-bed facility.

These efforts reflect the Assam government’s broader vision to bolster healthcare infrastructure and position Guwahati as a leading medical hub in the region.
