SEZ Double Shot: Puducherry Set for ₹2,000 Crore Industrial Boom

The Central Government has notified two new Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Puducherry following approval from the Board of Approval under the Department of Commerce, marking a significant step toward enhancing the Union Territory’s industrial and export ecosystem.

The first project is an IT/ITES SEZ proposed by Oulgaret Municipality at Thattanchavady village in Oulgaret Taluk. Spanning 8.623 hectares, it will be the first municipality-developed SEZ in India. The project is expected to attract investments of approximately ₹725 crore and create employment opportunities for around 3,500 people.

The second project is a multi-sector SEZ being developed by the Pondicherry Industrial Promotion Development and Investment Corporation (PIPDIC) at Karasur village in Villianur Taluk. Spread across 86.245 hectares, the SEZ is projected to attract investments of about ₹1,250 crore and generate nearly 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.

According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, these projects are expected to accelerate Puducherry’s export-led growth, boost industrial development, attract fresh investments, and create substantial employment opportunities across the Tamil Nadu–Andaman & Puducherry (TAP) region.
