Steel's Leap Forward: SRTMI Ignites R&D Revolution

The government has launched three initiatives under the Steel Research Technology Mission of India (SRTMI) to boost R&D in steelmaking.

SRTMI, a collaboration between the Ministry of Steel and the domestic steel industry, introduced new research schemes and a web portal to drive innovation and sustainability. These initiatives were unveiled at the 'Catalysing R&D in the Indian Steel Sector' event in the national capital.

Union Minister Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma emphasized their role in achieving India’s 300 MT steel capacity target by 2030 and stressed the importance of technology commercialisation and indigenous capital goods manufacturing. Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik highlighted the need for industry-specific research, particularly in the secondary steel sector, which accounts for 45% of India’s capacity.

The Challenge Method will tackle key industry issues, while the Open Innovation Method will foster collaboration between academia and industry. The Start-up Accelerator will support early-stage startups in steel technology. Additionally, the SteelCollab portal will connect industry leaders, researchers, startups, and academia to drive decarbonisation, digitalisation, and technological advancements in steel production.
