A New Link for the Bullet Train: Vishwamitri River Bridge Completed

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project has reached another major milestone with the completion of a bridge over the Vishwamitri River in Vadodara district, Gujarat.

This 80-metre structure is the 17th of 21 planned river bridges completed in Gujarat along the high-speed rail corridor. Positioned next to the Western Railway’s Vadodara-Surat main line, the bridge features three circular piers—two on the riverbanks and one within the river stream. Constructed using the span-by-span (SBS) method, the bridge comprises two 40-metre spans. Each pier stands between 26 and 29.5 metres high, supported by 12 piles measuring 1.8 metres in diameter and extending up to 53 metres deep.

Given Vadodara’s dense urban environment, construction required close coordination with the Vadodara Municipal Corporation and other local authorities. Notably, the Bullet Train alignment intersects the Vishwamitri River nine times in and around Vadodara. Of these, four crossings, including the main bridge, have been completed. Another key structure completed in the district is the 120-metre bridge over the Dhadhar River.

In total, 25 river bridges are planned along the corridor—21 in Gujarat and 4 in Maharashtra—with construction progressing rapidly across the entire route.
