Goa Shipyard Ltd. (GSL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Hyderabad to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into shipbuilding, enhancing vessel design, shipyard security, and operational efficiency.
Formalized on March 10, 2025, the collaboration includes technology partners Neer Interactive Solutions, the Centre for Geospatial AI and Digital Twins (CGDT), and Andhra Mahila Sabha (AMS) Arts and Science College. GSL will leverage AI-driven generative design and geospatial technologies to improve the accuracy and speed of ship construction while strengthening safety measures.
As a shipyard under the Ministry of Defence, GSL is modernizing with AI-powered predictive maintenance, automated ship design, and smart manufacturing. It is currently building two indigenous warships featuring stealth capabilities and extended endurance for long-range maritime operations. Previously, GSL has used AI to optimize production cycles, enhance quality control, and reduce turnaround times. Additionally, it is exploring digital twin technology to create dynamic virtual replicas of vessels that update in real-time to support decision-making.
IIT Hyderabad brings expertise in deep learning for industrial automation, real-time geospatial analysis, and digital twin technology. Its CGDT unit integrates AI with geospatial intelligence, enabling real-time infrastructure monitoring and industrial process optimization.
