Apple is reportedly in preliminary discussions with Indian semiconductor manufacturers to assemble and package iPhone components locally, marking a potential expansion of its manufacturing footprint in India.
This development represents a significant step as Apple explores the possibility of having certain chips assembled and packaged within the country. Among the key companies involved is CG Semi, part of the Murugappa Group, which is establishing a semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujarat. The facility, backed by both central and state government support, is expected to have a production capacity of 0.5 million units per day and is targeted to commence commercial operations by 2026.
According to sources, the discussions are still at a very early stage, with display-related chips likely to be the initial focus. If finalized, the collaboration could provide a substantial boost to India’s semiconductor ecosystem, complementing other recent advances in the sector.
