Assam Secures Prime Land in Mumbai's Colaba

In a significant move to support Assamese citizens, the Assam government has secured a prime land parcel in Mumbai’s Colaba for the development of a multi-purpose public infrastructure facility.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced that the Mumbai Port Authority (MPA) has allotted approximately four bighas (2.5 acres) of land to Assam on a 60-year lease, following a formal request from the Assam Chief Secretary to the Union Ministry.

Describing it as a “people-first initiative,” Minister Sonowal stated that the project aims to provide direct, long-term benefits to the Assamese community residing in or visiting Mumbai.

The upcoming facility will serve as a multi-functional centre, catering to:

Healthcare and medical support, Educational and welfare services, Social outreach programs, An incubation hub for entrepreneurs

Strategically located in India’s financial capital, the centre is expected to offer enhanced access to resources and opportunities for students, patients, job seekers, and startups from Assam. Officials confirmed that sustainable design and public utility features are being prioritized to ensure maximum long-term impact.

This initiative marks a forward-looking step in expanding Assam’s presence beyond the Northeast, creating a meaningful support system for its diaspora across urban India.
