FedEx and IIT Madras: Driving sustainability with AI

FedEx has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to establish the SMART Centre (Supply Chain Modelling, Algorithms, Research, and Technology Centre) on the institute’s campus.

Funded through a five-year, USD 5 million grant from FedEx, the SMART Centre is designed to accelerate innovation in logistics by leveraging advanced research, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. The centre will focus on developing agile, resilient, and environmentally sustainable supply chains.

Key areas of research include carbon-neutral logistics, autonomous infrastructure, predictive analytics, and AI-driven worker safety systems. In addition to research, the SMART Centre will function as a collaborative knowledge hub, bringing together academia, industry leaders, and policymakers to address critical challenges in the global supply chain ecosystem.

The centre was inaugurated in the presence of senior FedEx leaders, including Kami Viswanathan, President – Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Africa (MEISA), and Mohamad Tatiwala, Vice President – Marketing, Customer Experience, and Air Network, MEISA, along with IIT Madras leadership, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, and Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean – Alumni and Corporate Relations.
