Goa Shipyard to Invest ₹8,000 Crore in Machilipatnam Warship Facility

Andhra Pradesh has approved a major defence and warship-building facility at Machilipatnam, with Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) committing an investment of Rs 8,000 crore to the project.

Cleared by the Andhra Pradesh State Investment Promotion Committee (SIPC), the initiative marks GSL’s first-ever expansion outside its traditional home base in Goa. The new facility will span 400 acres allotted across two phases (198 acres in the first phase and 195 acres in the second). Preparatory work, including the detailed project report and environmental impact assessments, is scheduled to begin next month.

Strategically positioned on India's east coast, the facility will help mitigate operational disruptions caused by seasonal monsoons that typically halt open-air shipbuilding activities in Goa. The project is projected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, significantly boosting the regional economy and reinforcing India's domestic defence manufacturing capabilities.
