Greater Noida Emerges as Key Hub in Apple's India Manufacturing Push

The Uttar Pradesh government is in advanced talks with Foxconn, Apple’s largest contract manufacturer, to establish a major mobile phone production facility in Greater Noida. If finalized, this would mark Foxconn’s first large-scale manufacturing footprint in North India, significantly expanding Apple’s supply chain in the country.

Two rounds of meetings between Foxconn and government officials have already taken place in Delhi and Lucknow. The proposed plant—spread across 300 acres—would be distinct from Foxconn’s existing 50-acre OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) joint venture with HCL in the same region.

Greater Noida, which accounts for nearly 50% of India’s mobile phone exports, is seen as a strategic location for this project. The facility is expected to generate around 40,000 jobs, with on-site residential housing planned for the workforce.

This move aligns with Apple and Foxconn’s broader strategy to diversify their supply chain beyond China amid ongoing geopolitical and trade tensions. The Greater Noida facility could eventually surpass the scale of Foxconn’s Bengaluru plant, currently set to become its second-largest globally. Separately, Foxconn is investing $37.2 million to acquire a 40% stake in its semiconductor JV with HCL, pending Cabinet approval.
