Harvesting Prosperity: Rajasthan's New Era of Grain Storage

The Rajasthan government has launched a major initiative to enhance food grain storage capacity through the cooperative sector, aiming to protect farmers’ produce from losses caused by weather extremes and inadequate infrastructure.

As part of the ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’ programme, both the state and central governments are jointly promoting the construction of godowns in high-production districts with limited storage options.

In the 2024–25 budget, ₹31 crore was allocated to build 100 new godowns (each with a 500 metric tonne capacity) and renovate 50 existing ones. For 2025–26, the government has earmarked ₹45 crore to construct an additional:

100 godowns of 500 MT capacity, 50 godowns of 250 MT capacity, Reconstruction of 100 old storage units

Moreover, under the National Agriculture Development Scheme, approval has been granted for the construction of 48 godowns, each with a 500 MT capacity.

Overall, the initiative targets the creation of over 1.6 lakh metric tonnes of new storage capacity during 2024–26. Progress is already underway, with 36 godowns completed and several others approved.

This drive is expected to:

Reduce post-harvest losses, Prevent distress sales, Lower transportation costs, Boost cooperative society incomes through rental revenue

The initiative underscores Rajasthan’s commitment to strengthening agriculture infrastructure and enhancing farmer welfare through robust, decentralized storage systems.
