D. K. Shivakumar has announced that the detailed project report (DPR) for the long-pending Mekedatu Project has been prepared and will soon be submitted to the Union government for approval.
Speaking at Kollegal, the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister stated that the state government has already established a dedicated project office and initiated the process of identifying land for compensatory afforestation related to forest areas likely to be submerged under the project. He added that the foundation stone for the Mekedatu project will be laid once the necessary clearances are obtained from the Centre.
The proposed Mekedatu balancing reservoir project is considered strategically significant for strengthening drinking water supply and improving water management in southern Karnataka, particularly for Bengaluru. The project is also expected to support hydropower generation and enhance river regulation capabilities in the region.
