Work on the rejuvenation of the Musi River is set to begin within a month, as the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation (MRDCL) moves ahead with preparations for a large-scale redevelopment initiative.
The project aims to transform a 55-km stretch of the river in Hyderabad into a vibrant urban and ecological corridor. It is expected to receive funding support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which has already granted in-principle approval. Phase I will cover a 21-km stretch from Osmansagar to Bapu Ghat, focusing on river restoration measures such as silt and debris removal, riverbed profiling, flood protection works, slope stabilisation, and associated infrastructure development. The estimated cost for this phase ranges between ₹6,500 crore and ₹7,000 crore, with funding inflows anticipated within the next two months.
The broader vision includes developing the riverfront into a hub for public spaces, culture, and innovation. Plans also include the creation of Gandhi Sarovar at Bapu Ghat with commemorative and cultural features.
Meanwhile, the detailed project report (DPR) for Phase II is under preparation and is expected to be completed within six months.
