The Centre has announced a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving access to Kedarnath, reducing travel time, and enhancing safety for pilgrims.
As part of the plan, a seven-kilometre twin-tube tunnel has been proposed to directly connect Chaumasi in the Kalimath Valley, near Guptkashi, with Sonprayag, the base point of the upcoming Kedarnath ropeway. Officials said the tunnel will not only provide a faster and more reliable route but also serve as a critical escape passage during emergencies and extreme weather events, addressing persistent challenges in the fragile Himalayan terrain. In addition, a feasibility study is planned for a pedestrian tunnel and walkway from Chaumasi to further strengthen connectivity.
At present, all traffic to Sonprayag and Gauri Kund is routed through National Highway 107, which frequently experiences congestion during the Char Dham yatra. To ease future traffic movement, the existing one-lane road in the Kalimath Valley will be widened to two lanes. Authorities have stated that detailed geological and hydrological surveys will be conducted to minimise risks and ensure safety in this environmentally sensitive mountain region.
